Portfolio > Piedmont Garden 25-26

I planted this garden on a one-third acre lot in a subdivision in North Carolina. The land has a moderate slope with a remnant Piedmont woodland and large boulders. The existing native trees on the lot include: Red oak, tulip tree, American elm, winged elm, wild cherry, dogwood, redbud, black gum, hickory, blackhaw, sweet gum, red maple, and amazingly a small yellowwood.

After clearing invasive understory and vines, we began planting native trees, shrubs and perennials. The new trees include Southern magnolia, sweet bay magnolia, pawpaw, sourwood, serviceberry, and possumhaw. I learned how a relatively small lot can become a rich woodland garden and arboretum for pollinators, birds, fireflies, and a variety of mammals, reptiles, and people!
